WebP is a modern image format developed by Google, based on the VP8 video codec. Its lossy compression outperforms JPEG by 25β35% at equivalent visual quality. Its lossless compression outperforms PNG by 26%. Unlike JPEG, WebP supports transparency. Unlike PNG for photos, WebP achieves much smaller file sizes. And unlike GIF, animated WebP supports full colour (not just 256 colours) with far better compression.

WebP: The Complete Guide to Google's Image Format
WebP is now the de-facto standard for web images. Understanding its strengths, limitations, and how to implement it correctly can dramatically improve your website's performance and user experience.
What Makes WebP Different from JPEG and PNG?
Lossy vs Lossless WebP
Lossy WebP uses predictive coding: it divides the image into blocks, predicts block content from neighbouring blocks, and encodes only the difference (residual). Higher quality settings encode residuals more accurately; lower settings discard more. Lossless WebP uses a palette coding, spatial prediction, and entropy coding chain β similar to PNG but more efficient. Use lossy for photographs and lossless for logos, UI elements, and anything with sharp edges.
WebP Transparency (Alpha Channel)
WebP supports an 8-bit alpha channel for both lossy and lossless modes. In lossy mode, the RGB channels are compressed with lossy encoding while the alpha channel is compressed losslessly β giving you a small transparent image. This is often dramatically smaller than an equivalent PNG: a 100Γ100 transparent logo might be 8 KB as PNG but only 2 KB as lossy WebP with alpha.
Implementing WebP with Fallbacks
The safest way to serve WebP is using the HTML <picture> element with a fallback: specify the WebP source first, then a JPEG/PNG fallback. Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari 14+) will choose WebP; older browsers fall back to JPEG automatically. Most CDNs and image services (Cloudinary, Imgix, Cloudflare Images) can serve WebP automatically based on the Accept header, eliminating the need for manual fallbacks.
WebP in WordPress, Shopify, and Other CMS Platforms
WordPress 5.8+ supports WebP uploads natively. Shopify automatically converts uploaded images to WebP when served through their CDN. Webflow serves WebP automatically. For platforms that do not yet handle WebP, pre-convert your images using our tool before uploading β the result is the same optimised delivery with no plugin or CDN dependency required.
