Preguntas Frecuentes

Todo lo que necesitas saber sobre esta herramienta de conversión.

Using stream copy mode, cuts are precise to the nearest keyframe (I-frame) in the video. For most compressed video, this means cuts land within 0.5–2 seconds of your specified point. For frame-perfect accuracy, re-encoding mode can be selected.

Stream copy mode transfers the video and audio data to the new file without decoding and re-encoding each frame. Since no encoding occurs, it completes in seconds regardless of video length. The trade-off is cuts are to the nearest keyframe rather than any exact frame.

Currently, each operation produces one clip defined by a start time and duration. For multiple cuts, process each desired clip separately. Results can then be merged with our Video Merger.

Yes. Stream copy preserves the original video codec, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and all other properties. The only difference is the shorter duration.

Both platforms prefer MP4 with H.264 video. If your source is MP4, the trimmed output will be perfect for upload. If it's another format, use our MP4 Converter after cutting.

This tool is designed for video files. For audio trimming, use our dedicated Audio Cutter tool which supports MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, and other audio formats.

Video Cutting Guide: Stream Copy, Keyframes, and Precision Trimming

Cutting a video seems simple — but the technology behind it involves important concepts like keyframes, stream copy, and encoding modes that directly affect speed, quality, and precision. Understanding these helps you choose the right approach for every trimming task.

Stream Copy: The Fastest Way to Cut Video

Stream copy mode (-codec copy in FFmpeg) transfers compressed video and audio data directly to the new file without any decoding or re-encoding. This means:

  • Cutting a 60-minute video completes in 1–3 seconds.
  • Zero quality loss — the data is bit-for-bit identical to the source.
  • No CPU-intensive work — your computer barely does anything.

The only limitation: cuts snap to the nearest keyframe, so you may get a cut 0.5–2 seconds from your exact target.

What Is a Keyframe and Why Does It Matter for Cutting?

Compressed video (H.264, H.265) stores most frames as differences from previous frames. Only keyframes (I-frames) contain complete frame data. A cut with stream copy must start at a keyframe — otherwise the output video would start with corrupted frames that reference missing prior data.

Most videos have keyframes every 2–5 seconds. This means stream-copy cuts are accurate to within that interval. For most social media and casual use cases, this is perfectly acceptable.

When to Use Re-encode Mode for Frame-Perfect Accuracy

If you need cuts at an exact frame (e.g., for a sports highlight that needs to start at the precise moment of a goal), re-encode mode decodes the video to the exact frame position and then re-encodes from that point forward. This is slower (takes time proportional to clip length) but produces a cut at any arbitrary frame.

Re-encode mode uses CRF 23 H.264 by default, producing a very small quality reduction compared to stream copy.

Time Format Guide: Entering Start Times Correctly

The video cutter accepts time in HH:MM:SS format:

  • 0:30 = 30 seconds from start
  • 1:30 = 1 minute 30 seconds
  • 1:02:30 = 1 hour, 2 minutes, 30 seconds
  • 0:00:45.500 = 45.5 seconds (sub-second precision)

Duration works the same way: a duration of 0:45 means the clip will be 45 seconds long from the start point.

Creating Multiple Clips: Cut, Then Merge

If you need several non-contiguous segments from one video — for example, a highlights reel from a longer recording — use the Video Cutter to extract each segment individually, then use our Video Merger to combine them into a final compilation. This two-step workflow gives you precision control over each cut without needing a full video editor.
