Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this conversion tool.

AVI is considered a legacy format but remains relevant for DVD authoring, compatibility with older editing software, and playback on legacy hardware. For modern use, MP4 or MKV are generally better choices.

Xvid is the traditional AVI codec with broad legacy compatibility. H.264 inside AVI offers better quality/compression but may not work in very old players. For DVD authoring, check your authoring tool's requirements.

AVI files using Xvid or especially uncompressed codecs can be significantly larger than MP4 equivalents. If file size is a concern, consider using our MP4 Converter or Video Compressor instead.

Most modern smart TVs support AVI playback via USB, though codec support varies. If playback issues occur, try re-encoding the AVI with the H.264 codec option for broader TV compatibility.

Yes — AVI files are also accepted as input. Upload your AVI and convert it to MP4, MKV, WebM, or any other supported output format.

By default, the audio track in the AVI output is encoded as MP3, which has the broadest compatibility with AVI players. AAC inside AVI is also supported but may not play in older software.

AVI Format Guide: History, Codecs, and When to Still Use It

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) was Microsoft's answer to QuickTime in 1992. While modern formats have largely superseded it, AVI remains the required format for specific legacy workflows — particularly DVD authoring and older video editing pipelines. Here's when and why to convert to AVI.

A Brief History of AVI

Microsoft introduced AVI in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows framework. It became the dominant PC video format through the 1990s and into the 2000s, supported by virtually every media player and editing tool of the era.

The format's popularity spawned the DivX and Xvid codecs — compressed video codecs that could fit a DVD-quality movie onto a single CD-ROM. The "DivX rip" era of the early 2000s ran almost entirely on AVI containers.

Xvid vs DivX vs H.264 Inside AVI

  • Xvid: Open-source DivX-compatible codec. Broad legacy player support. Moderate compression efficiency. The safe choice for legacy compatibility.
  • DivX: Proprietary but widely licensed codec. Similar to Xvid in quality. Preferred by some DVD players with DivX certification.
  • H.264 in AVI: Modern quality inside an old container. Better compression than Xvid but may not play in players that only recognise old-style AVI codecs.

DVD Authoring: Why It Still Requires AVI

Most consumer-grade DVD authoring software — DVDStyler, DVD Flick, Nero Vision — was built before MP4 became universal. These tools typically require AVI (Xvid or DivX) or MPEG-2 as input formats. If you have MP4 or MKV footage and want to author a physical DVD, converting to AVI/Xvid first is often the path of least resistance.

AVI Limitations You Should Know About

Before choosing AVI, be aware of its significant limitations versus modern formats:

  • No subtitle track embedding: AVI cannot natively store subtitle streams. Subtitles must be hardcoded (burned in) or supplied as separate files.
  • Large file sizes: Xvid and DivX produce files substantially larger than equivalent H.264 or H.265 output.
  • No chapter markers: AVI does not support internal chapter markers.
  • Limited audio track support: Only one or two audio streams maximum.

Converting FROM AVI: Modernising Legacy Footage

If you have a library of old AVI files from camcorders or DVD rips, converting them to MP4 or MKV is highly recommended. Use our MP4 Converter to bring them into the modern era — you'll typically halve the file size while improving playback compatibility across all current devices.
