Converting Markdown to PDF via Pandoc involves two stages: first, Pandoc parses the Markdown source into its own internal abstract syntax tree (AST); second, it serialises the AST to LaTeX source, which is then compiled by XeLaTeX into a PDF. The LaTeX stage uses Pandoc's default template (or a custom one) to add document structure: title page, table of contents, section numbering, page headers, and the KOMA-Script document class for European typographic defaults.

Pandoc and Markdown to PDF: How XeLaTeX Delivers Professional Document Typesetting
Pandoc is often called the "Swiss army knife" of document conversion. Its Markdown-to-PDF pipeline is the gold standard for converting plain text into professionally typeset documents without the complexity of writing raw LaTeX.
The Pandoc Markdown-to-PDF Pipeline
GitHub Flavored Markdown Support
Standard Markdown covers basic formatting: bold, italic, headings, lists, and links. GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) extends this with fenced code blocks with language identifiers, tables, task lists, and strikethrough. Pandoc supports all of these. Additionally, Pandoc's own Markdown dialect adds footnotes, definition lists, YAML metadata blocks (for title, author, date), citations (via pandoc-citeproc), and raw LaTeX passthrough for advanced formatting.
Mathematical Equations
Pandoc supports LaTeX math syntax natively. Inline equations use $...$ delimiters; display (block) equations use $$...$$. In PDF output, these are compiled directly by XeLaTeX using the full TeX math engine — the same as a professionally typeset journal paper. In HTML output, MathJax renders the same equations in the browser using JavaScript. DOCX output uses Word's built-in OMML math format.
Code Syntax Highlighting
Pandoc uses the KDE syntax highlighting library (via the skylighting Haskell library) to apply syntax highlighting to fenced code blocks. Over 120 programming and markup languages are supported. In PDF output, highlighting uses coloured text within a code block environment. Styles (kate, tango, zenburn, etc.) are selectable via Pandoc options. In HTML output, the same colours are applied as inline CSS spans, requiring no external JavaScript library.
Custom Templates and Styling
For users who need custom branding — a company logo, specific fonts, custom margins — Pandoc supports template files. A LaTeX template controls all aspects of PDF appearance via Pandoc template variables ($title$, $author$, $geometry$, etc.). For HTML output, a custom CSS file can be included. Upload a ZIP containing your .md file and a template.tex or custom.css file to apply your own design to the converted output.
