Preguntas Frecuentes

Todo lo que necesitas saber sobre esta herramienta de conversión.

AAC is a codec (audio encoding standard) while M4A is a container format (file wrapper). An M4A file typically contains AAC-encoded audio. Think of AAC as the engine and M4A as the car body.

ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) is Apple's lossless compression standard, stored in M4A containers. It preserves 100% of the original audio data — similar to FLAC but designed for Apple software. Choose ALAC when quality is paramount.

Yes. M4A files play on Android via VLC, Google Play Music, and most media players. On Windows, they work in Windows Media Player (with the right codec), VLC, and iTunes for Windows.

No — both FLAC and ALAC are lossless codecs. Converting between them involves no quality loss. The only change is the container format, making your files compatible with Apple's ecosystem.

Download the file, then drag it into your iTunes or Music app window, or go to File → Add to Library and select the M4A file. It will appear immediately in your library with all its metadata.

Files purchased from the iTunes Store in the past may have had DRM (FairPlay). M4A files converted by EasyConv are completely DRM-free. However, we cannot remove DRM from files that are already DRM-protected.

M4A Audio Files: iTunes, ALAC, and the Apple Ecosystem

M4A is the file extension Apple uses for audio-only files stored in the MPEG-4 container format. It is the native format of iTunes, Apple Music, iPhone Voice Memos, and GarageBand exports. Understanding M4A — and the two codecs it can carry — helps you work fluently within the Apple ecosystem and convert other formats into it correctly.

What Is Inside an M4A File?

An M4A file is an MP4 container (.mp4) with only an audio track and the file extension changed to .m4a. The container can hold two different codecs: AAC-LC (lossy, most common) or ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec, lossless). When iTunes encodes a song, it produces AAC inside an M4A container. When you rip a CD in lossless mode in the Music app, it produces ALAC inside an M4A container. The .m4a extension is shared by both, so the only way to know which codec is in use is to inspect the file properties.

ALAC: Apple's Answer to FLAC

Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) was introduced in 2004 and open-sourced in 2011. Like FLAC, it compresses audio without any quality loss — decoding always produces bit-identical PCM. ALAC files stored in M4A containers are supported natively on every Apple device and in the Music app on macOS. The main trade-off vs FLAC is ecosystem: ALAC works best in the Apple world, while FLAC has broader cross-platform support. Converting between the two involves zero quality loss — it is purely a container and codec swap.

AAC Bitrate Recommendations for M4A Files

When creating lossy M4A files with AAC, your bitrate choice determines quality and file size. Apple Music uses 256 kbps AAC as its streaming quality, which is considered perceptually transparent by most listeners. For podcast delivery, 128 kbps stereo or 96 kbps mono is the recommended range. For voice memos and spoken recordings, 64–96 kbps mono sounds clear and keeps files tiny. Always choose the lowest bitrate that meets your quality requirements to save storage and bandwidth.

Creating iPhone Ringtones from M4A

iPhone ringtones are simply M4A audio files with the .m4r extension. To create a custom ringtone: use the Audio Cutter to trim your audio clip to 30 seconds or less, convert it to M4A (AAC) using this tool, download the file, rename the extension from .m4a to .m4r, and then drag it into iTunes or Music on your Mac. After syncing, the ringtone appears in Settings → Sounds & Haptics on your iPhone. No third-party app or jailbreak required.

Importing M4A Files into the Apple Music App

Apple Music (formerly iTunes) accepts M4A files for local library import. Simply drag and drop the .m4a file onto the Music app window, or use File → Import. The file will appear with all its embedded metadata — title, artist, album, artwork, genre. If you are migrating a large library of non-Apple formats (FLAC, WMA, OGG) to Apple, converting to M4A (AAC for casual listening, ALAC for audiophile quality) ensures every track behaves natively in your Apple ecosystem.
