It's important to understand that OGG is a container format maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation — like MP4 or MKV, it holds compressed data streams. Vorbis is the audio codec that is most commonly stored inside OGG containers. When people say "OGG file", they almost always mean an OGG container with a Vorbis audio stream. Other codecs (FLAC, OPUS, Speex) can also be stored in OGG containers, but the OGG Vorbis combination is the widely understood standard.

OGG Vorbis: The Open Audio Standard for Games and the Web
OGG Vorbis has been the audio format of choice for open-source software and game development for over two decades. Unlike MP3 — which was burdened by patent licences until 2017 — Vorbis was designed from the ground up to be free, open, and unencumbered. Today it remains the preferred audio format wherever licensing freedom and open standards matter.
OGG the Container, Vorbis the Codec
Why Game Developers Choose OGG Vorbis
Game audio has unique requirements: files must be small (to reduce download size), decode quickly (for real-time playback), and loop seamlessly. OGG Vorbis excels on all fronts. Unity, Godot, Unreal, SDL, LÖVE, and virtually every major engine include native Vorbis decoders. Before 2017, using MP3 in a commercial game required licensing fees to Fraunhofer — OGG Vorbis had no such cost. Even now that MP3 patents have expired, OGG remains the convention in game development, and most audio tools and pipelines are already built around it.
Variable Bitrate Encoding: Getting More from Less
Vorbis uses Variable Bitrate (VBR) encoding rather than the Constant Bitrate (CBR) model used by basic MP3 encoders. With VBR, the encoder allocates more bits to complex passages (dense instrumentation, high-frequency transients) and fewer bits to simple sections (sustained tones, silence). The result is better perceptual quality per kilobyte compared to CBR at the same average bitrate. The Vorbis quality scale runs from -1 to 10; quality 5 produces approximately 160 kbps on average and is an excellent default for music.
OGG Vorbis vs OPUS: Which Should You Use?
Both are stored in OGG containers and are patent-free. OPUS is the newer codec (2012) and outperforms Vorbis at very low bitrates — below 64 kbps, OPUS is dramatically better for speech and music alike. For voice chat, VoIP, and streaming at low bitrates, choose OPUS. For game background music, web audio, and general-purpose encoding at 96–256 kbps, OGG Vorbis is a well-supported, mature, and thoroughly tested choice. Many projects use both: Vorbis for music and OPUS for voice lines and ambient audio at lower bitrates.
Browser Support for OGG Audio
OGG Vorbis is supported natively in the HTML5 <audio> element in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera without any codec plugin. Safari has supported OGG since version 11 (macOS High Sierra). This makes OGG a safe choice for browser-based games using the Web Audio API, and for web pages that want to serve audio without relying on MP3. For maximum compatibility, it is common practice to provide both OGG and MP3 versions of audio files, letting the browser choose the preferred format.
